Bokashi in a basket

I’m always on the lookout for new ways of getting Bokashi to work in the garden. Surprisingly, this turned out to be one of the better! I’ve had a couple of cane baskets kicking around for a while, rather bottomless and sad. So a couple of months ago I plonked them straight down between aContinue reading “Bokashi in a basket”

Bokashi in East Village, Chigago

Interesting article here by a guy in East Chicago, Scott A. Rappe, who vows and declares he knows nothing about composting. But he’s set up a great backyard, inner-city compost based on Bokashi. The buckets he’s made himself from bits and bobs and he’s tested his way through to a system that works well forContinue reading “Bokashi in East Village, Chigago”

Banana box Bokashi

It doesn’t get much simpler than this. If you’re in a hurry to grow something and haven’t got anywhere to do it, just grab a banana box and start planting! I tested this idea some months ago and it’s turned out really well. I plonked down the banana box on an area I’m clearing forContinue reading “Banana box Bokashi”

Comments from a Bokashi newbie

Came across this blog from a guy out there (Edmonton, Canada I think) who’s just started on Bokashi. Thought you might be interested in hearing his perspective — so far so good it seems, he is really positive and want’s to make a difference. His buckets are working fine and his plan is to pass his readyContinue reading “Comments from a Bokashi newbie”

DIY potting mix — delivered to the door

Remember the experiment we started during the winter? Outdoor “snow” bokashi in clamped plastic bags? Well, it was a hit! It’s an uphill battle here to store ready-fermented Bokashi during the winter, four months of snow and nowhere to dig. Nowhere over zero degrees C for that matter either. So we tested soil bags outside.Continue reading “DIY potting mix — delivered to the door”

Bokashi kids: LeFevre Kindergarten in Australia

Here at Le Fevre Kindergarten in South Australia the kids have been putting their leftover sandwiches and bananas into the Bokashi bin for 10 years. And growing their own fruit and veggies in these great raised beds. I bet there’s many more lovely stories like this around, we’ll try and dig out a few moreContinue reading “Bokashi kids: LeFevre Kindergarten in Australia”

Any Bokashi preschools out there?

We’re working here in Sweden with a lovely local preschool — it’s owned and run by the employees and they’re really committed to what they’re doing. One project they’ve started up lately is Bokashi composting. So now there’s no more kitchen waste (and they make all their own food in their own kitchen) and insteadContinue reading “Any Bokashi preschools out there?”

Bokashi kids in Gisborne

OK, so I have a soft spot for stories from New Zealand, but the thing is they’re doing a really good job downunder in getting kids involved in Bokashi composting and growing. Here’s a nice little story from the Scoop news site in NZ talking about how kids at the Te Kainga Whaiora Childrens HealthContinue reading “Bokashi kids in Gisborne”
